Lawmakers Vote To Reform KidCare Program
TALLAHASSEE - Children of illegal immigrants could qualify for taxpayer-funded health insurance under a measure that passed after emotional debate Wednesday in the Florida House. The significance may be more symbolic than practical. Advocates for immigrants say the program's application process may be an impossible barrier for those who are in this country illegally. Still, 98 House members thought it was an important step. "I am a compassionate conservative, and that is why I am voting for this bill," said Rep. Juan Zapata, R-Miami, during Wednesday's debate over a bill to reform KidCare, the state's health insurance program for low-income children. "These kids go to school; these kids go to our hospitals. … The last thing I am going to do as a legislator is turn my back on these kids who want to be Americans." The expansive bill would remove many bureaucratic stumbling blocks that have kept families out of the complex KidCare program.
DSM Features Lower Operating Profit Caused by Negative Impact of ...
30/04/07 DSM announced that its first quarter sales rose 4% to 2.14 billion euro. EBIT, however, fell 6% to 192 million euro. In a statement, DSM attributes lower operating profit in part to much lower average currency exchange rates; the phasing-out of some contracts related to the acquisition of Roche Vitamins had a negative effect of less than EUR 10 million. DSM Nutritional Products saw its sales volumes in animal and human nutrition/health grow compared to Q1 2006. DSM Nutritional Products operating profit declined as a result of lower margins and the strongly negative impact of the US dollar, the company said. The operating profit was also negatively affected by reduced output at the Dalry site (Vitamin C, UK), which has continued into the second quarter due to a fire in a transformer, added DSM.

A campaign to get the state's Medicaid HMOs to disclose more information about their rates and services has suffered a setback, but state lawmakers are vowing to continue the fight.

Health Officials Advise Caution On Vaccine
State public health officials this morning cautioned lawmakers against rushing into passing a law that would require young girls to receive a new vaccine against cervical cancer.
James Hadler, who heads the department's infectious disease division, said that the experience with the vaccine is still limited and advised lawmakers to hold off before making the vaccine a requirement for school entry.
